Many years ago – when Technology Alberta looked for 2 of the most important words to state what we do, how we do it, and why we do it – we chose: Technology Alberta, Building Community.
In the memorable-movie words of a guardian knight – we “chose well”. As an organization that partners to support the growth of Alberta’s tech sector of innovative entrepreneurial small businesses who are often creating markets or change in existing markets, as well as developing new products and approaches – this is not an individual sport, and they need a supportive and connected community.
So how do we build community? One invitation or introduction at a time – which at Technology Alberta, may not even come from our staff or volunteers. It makes our day, when someone reaches out to us – and invites us to partner, or asks us to make an introduction. And the good news is – it does happen every day!
What is the call to action? Ask, offer, show-up – we can all make a difference, and we all DO make a difference when we help others. Our collective journey is not “A Ladder of Success” but a “Circle of Community” – and this circle is a strong one! It starts with people who have some experience or funding or talent – offering to share with the young company which is just getting started, or encountering obstacles. And as the experienced professionals change jobs or go on a new adventure and miss their community (as they almost always do) they have a way to re-connect, often resulting in mutual value. It doesn’t have to be “lonely at the top” or even a “lonely journey”, when you are part of a connected inclusive community, where everyone is appreciated, because we all have something to contribute when the objective is to build community and “lift all ships”.
And the young company – what can they offer? What we all need – energy, hope and the opportunity to make a difference.
Any questions or ideas anyone? Please do come out and meet us at one of the events this summer and this year – whether at the Edmonton Research Park, Olds College, or at the University of Calgary – or feel free to send me a note anytime via LinkedIn or [email protected]
Thanks everyone, and looking forward to making a difference together,
Gail
