Go Back to Focus on Talent

Hello Alberta Innovation Community,

We’re continuing to highlight insights we’ve gained through our TechBOOST (Technology Business Optimization, Operations, Scaleup, and Talent) program application. In today’s article, we’ll take a look at how Alberta entrepreneurial tech companies perceive the value of HR skills and processes.

In the application form, companies were asked two questions regarding HR skills and process:

  1. How important do you think HR processes are to your company’s growth and success?

  2. How confident are you in your HR skills and processes?

Both questions were answered on a scale of one to five, and the results are summarized in Figure 1 below. The results clearly show that although the majority of companies (58%) see HR skills and processes as being of very high importance to their company’s success, less than 10% have very high confidence in their HR skills and processes.

These results mirror the conversations we’ve had with Alberta tech SMB (Small-to-Medium-sized Businesses) founders/owners over the last several years, who’ve shared that managing HR is one of the many hats they wear in their role, despite having little to no experience with establishing HR processes.
