More than 2,300 people gathered Sunday afternoon at the University of Alberta to remember 13 people with connections to Edmonton and 163 others killed when Ukrainian International Airlines flight 752 was shot down in Iran last Wednesday. Here’s a look at what happened during the emotional, sombre memorial.
1:30 p.m.: Hundreds begin pouring into the Saville Community Sports Centre. Photos of the victims are displayed at the front with flowers, food and electronic candles displayed along the stage.
3:01 p.m.: The auditorium is full. Extra chairs are put out in the centre section of the auditorium.
3:10 p.m.: Ceremony begins with the singing of O Canada, followed by a minute of silence to honour the victims. University of Alberta president David Turpin is the first speaker.
3:24 p.m.: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said all Canadians stand with the victims’ families, adding that the crash should have never happened: “We will not rest until there is justice and accountability.”
